IUI: Intrauterine Insemination

CMR Torino IUI: Intrauterine Insemination

IUI is one of the most common techniques in assisted reproduction, providing a solution for couples facing difficulties in conceiving.
This treatment aims to facilitate the fertilization process, increasing the chances of pregnancy.

IUI is the first-level artificial fertilization treatment in ART and involves moderate pharmacological stimulation of multiple ovulations. In some cases, it can be performed during a spontaneous cycle.

To monitor folliculogenesis during treatment, ultrasound checks and possible hormonal dosages are required. If stimulation leads to the development of an excessive number of follicles (› 3), the treatment may be suspended to avoid the risk of multiple pregnancies.

At the time of ovulation, the male partner is required to provide a semen sample: after appropriate treatment, the sperm is transferred into the uterine cavity via a catheter.

It is indicated in cases of infertility due to cervical mucus impassability for sperm and in cases of slight alterations in semen quality.

After 15 days from insemination, a pregnancy test is performed by checking the blood for the hormone β-HCG, produced by the embryo once implanted. If positive, approximately 20 days later, a follow-up ultrasound will be conducted to observe the presence of the gestational sac.

Once observed, the monitoring of the pregnancy can continue in the following months.

In the case of a negative result, the couple will still consult with the doctor to evaluate how to proceed.
